Potomac Institute's Senior Fellow Melissa Hathaway is a part of the Global Commission on Internet Governance (GCIG). The GCIG was launched in 2014 in response to trends towards fragmentation of the Internet, with the aim of offering new ways to address challenges as they arise. The Commission focused its recommendations on a call for a new global social compact to promote a single, open and secure Internet for all. The Commission presents a new report that is aimed at providing high-level strategic advice and recommendations to policy makers, private industry and the technical community interested in maintaining a healthy Internet. The GCIG framed its work around the definition of Internet governance, which roughly means "the development and application by governments, the private sector and civil society, in their respective roles, of shared principles, norms, rules, decision-making procedures, and programmes that shape the evolution and use of the Internet."
