“Terrorism Generational Challenges:

Political, Social, Economic, and Strategic Implications”

Although the ongoing public debates in the U.S. and abroad are about combating current terrorist threats, it is equally critical to focus attention on “the longer war” for the remainder of the 21st century. Experts with government, diplomatic, military, and academic experience analyzed the likely future terrorist challenges on the political, social, economic, and strategic levels and offered recommendations for effective responses by the U.S. and its friends and allies.

Opening remarks were given by General Alfred Gray, USMC (Ret.), Twenty-Ninth Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, Senior Fellow and Chairman of the Board of Regents, Potomac Institute for Policy Studies. The panel was moderated by Professor Yonah Alexander, Director, Inter-University Center for Terrorism Studies, and Senior Fellow, Potomac Institute for Policy Studies. The panel consisted of: Professor Dieter Dettke, former U.S. Representative and Executive Director of the Washington Office of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (Currently, Adjunct Professor in the Security Studies Program and the BMW Center for German and European Studies at Georgetown University); Dr. Scott Savran, former professor at Virginia Tech and Nazarbayev University in Kazakhstan (He is a specialist in Middle East and Islamic history currently working at the University of Maryland); Professor Fabrice Balanche, Associate Professor and research director at the University of Lyon 2 and visiting fellow at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy; Dr. Aykan Erdemir, Former member of the Turkish Parliament (Currently, Senior Fellow, Foundation for Defense of Democracies); and Mahbub Hassan Saleh, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Bangladesh. Closing remarks were given by Professor Don Wallace, Jr., Chairman, International Law Institute.
