The Potomac Institute for Policy Studies presented the fifth seminar in a series addressing science, technology, and policy issues relative to cyber security on Wednesday July 6. The program, "Cyber Deterrence: Mutual Assured Disruption or Other Options?" featured a panel including Gen. Michael Hayden, USAF (Ret.), currently a Principal at the Chertoff Group and a former Director of the CIA and NSA; Michael Tiffany, Chief Architect at Recursion Ventures; and Dr. James Mulvenon, Vice President, Intelligence Division, Defense Group, Inc. The Potomac Institute for Policy Studies hosted a special program presented by the USMC Returning Commander speaker series on Thursday, June 23. Col Mark Desens, commander of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, and Navy CAPT Pete Pagano, who led the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group, spoke about their recent nine-month deployment across Southwest Asia, the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Marine pilots involved in the dramatic rescue of a US Air Force F-15 pilot in Libya also spoke, and described the rescue in detail. Opening remarks were made by LtGen Keith Stalder, USMC (Ret.), Institute Senior Fellow, and closing remarks were by Gen Al Gray, 29th Commandant of the Marine Corps and Chairman of the Institute's Board of Regents. The Potomac Institute for Policy Studies' International Center for Terrorism Studies held a panel discussion, Cutting Through the "Fog of Law": Was Killing bin Laden an Illegal Extrajudicial Execution, a War Crime, or a Lawful Act During Armed Conflict? on Tuesday, June 28. Co-sponsors of this event included the Inter-University Center for Terrorism Studies, the Inter-University Center for Legal Studies of the International Law Institute, the Center for National Security Law of the University of Virginia School of Law, and the Center for Terrorism Law of the St. Mary's University School of Law. The Center for Neurotechnology Studies of the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies presented a special CCNELSI (Capital Consortium for Neuroscience: Ethical, Legal and Social Issues: www.ccnelsi.com) event, "Neuroscience and Pragmatism: Productive Prospects," from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm on Friday, June 10, 2011. The conference brought together pragmatist philosophers interested in neuroscience and neuroscientists interested in pragmatism. Click below to watch video of the event.
